Year 5 Bring The Odyssey to Life Through Creative Set Design

Last half term, Year 5 pupils completed an exciting art and design project inspired by The Odyssey, taking on the role of theatre set designers. Using scenes from the story, they created dramatic stage sets that captured the suspenseful and often frightening atmosphere of Odysseus’s journey.
The project began with charcoal designs for different parts of the set, with a focus on mood, texture and shadow. These initial ideas were then developed into detailed 3D models using card, paper and found materials. Pupils enhanced their designs by layering charcoal drawings and painted paper collage to add depth, detail and colour.
To conclude the project, pupils took part in a quiet gallery style critique, respectfully viewing one another’s work and sharing successes. This reflective session celebrated creativity, collaboration and the confidence to value everyone’s ideas.
