Phonics

Phonics and Reading

In Reception and Year One, the teaching of early reading is primarily through thirty minute daily phonic lessons. Read, Write Inc Phonics is used as the prime phonic scheme to ensure lessons are progressive, memorable and pacey. Outside the phonic lesson, phonic skills and strategies are regularly revisited and applied throughout the day to support learners with their reading and spelling across every area of the curriculum. Children in Year 2, who continue to require phonic teaching, are taught daily in small groups.

A range of resources are used to support the teaching and application of phonics for reading/spelling including word mats and displays. Progress in phonics is assessed and tracked monthly using the Read, Write Inc assessment and half-termly using past Phonic Screening papers. The statutory Phonics Screening Test is administered during the Summer Term in Year One and in Year Two learners for learners who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1.

In addition to phonics, we also recognise and support learners to develop their other reading strategies which include: instant sight recognition, context clues, picture clues and visual understanding of words.

Children who do not pass the phonic screening test in year two, continue to receive targeted phonic/reading support to ensure that children become fluent and life-long readers.
