Year 1 Explores Spirals and Mark-Making in Art

During their recent art lessons, Year 1 have been building an understanding of how marks are made on a drawing surface. Pupils discovered that the way they hold a drawing tool — and how they move their bodies — can influence the lines and shapes they create.

Inspired by the outdoor drawings of artist Molly Haslund, the children imitated her work by drawing large-scale spirals in the outdoor area. They then continued their exploration by creating snail drawings in their sketchbooks, followed by detailed observational drawings of shells.

This creative journey has helped Year 1 develop control, confidence, and curiosity in their mark-making — a fantastic start to their artistic development!
