Dosthill Primary Academy

Uniform and Appearance

We want our pupils to wear their uniform with pride. It shows that we belong to the Dosthill Primary Academy community. Our uniform policy reflects our values and reinforces our school’s culture of high expectations and academic achievement. All pupils are expected to dress according to the uniform policy; smartness and high standards of appearance are expected at all times.
We have a required school uniform for several reasons:

  • Uniforms unite the school. Pupils make a commitment that when they put on their Dosthill uniform they will abide by the rules of the community.
  • Uniforms reduce distractions. When pupils are allowed to wear their own clothing, there is the potential to talk about or focus on fashions and styles rather than learning.
  • Uniforms make us equal. Whether families have high incomes or low incomes, pupils come to school looking the same way.
  • Uniforms look professional. Pupils look neat and feel ready to learn. We ask parents and carers to support all decisions by school staff regarding whether or not clothing is appropriate or inappropriate for school.

All items of uniform must be labelled. School branded uniform, ties and other items can be purchased from WB Schoolwear either in store in Walton on Trent or through their website. Our uniform consists of the following:

Uniform

  • Bottle green knitwear jumper, tank top or cardigan with v-neck
(with or without logo but ensuring that it is knitwear style not sweatshirt style)
  • School tie compulsory
  • White shirt or blouse (these should be tucked in at all times)
  • Grey school trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore
  • Grey socks/grey tights
  • Summer dresses – green/white checked and white summer socks
  • Black shoes
    (not trainers)
Other optional products with logos available from WB Schoolwear:
  • Book bags
  • Document cases
  • House colour t-shirt for PE with logo - six house colours available
  • Fleece with logo
  • Coat with logo

PE Kit

To participate fully and safely, pupils need:

  • Pumps
  • Shorts (plain black or green)
  • T-shirt (house colour. T-shirts with the school logo can be bought from WB Schoolwear)
  • Trainers for outdoor use

All PE kit should be appropriate for school. Earrings should be removed for PE; in exceptional circumstances, for example if newly pierced, children can tape their own ears for PE however this would need written permissions sent to your child’s class teacher (without this, your child would be unable to participate)

Swimming:

  • Swimming trunks (plain – no baggy shorts)
  • Swimsuit
  • Swimming hat

Art and craft

Please send an old shirt in to school each year for art.

Further clarification on appearance

For health and safety reasons and to ensure that jewellery and accessories are appropriate for school we have the following policy. Thank you for following the school code in relation to the criteria below:

Jewellery

  • Jewellery should not be worn or brought into school.
  • If children have pierced ears, one pair of discreet/small studs may be worn.
  • For PE lessons in school, earrings must be removed for health and safety reasons.
  • Ideally, earrings should not be worn on PE days to avoid children losing their earrings.
  • If your child is unable to remove earrings by themselves, they should not come to school with them in on PE days.
  • In exceptional circumstances, children can tape their own ears for PE however this would need written permissions sent to your child’s class teacher (without this, your child would be unable to participate).
  • Smart watches or fitness bracelets should not be brought into school.

Hairstyles/Accessories

  • Hair should be one natural colour, no hair dye.
  • The style should be appropriate for school; hair should not obstruct pupils vision.
  • Pupils with long hair must have this tied back. This is also for health and safety reasons and prevents the spread of head lice.
  • Tramlines, patterns and sculpting is not appropriate for school.
  • Novelty headwear should not be worn.
  • Hair bands and bows should be green to match the school uniform and a reasonable size.

Pupils should not wear

  • Hoodies or sportswear.
  • Leggings or close-fitting trousers.
  • Trainers are NOT allowed to be worn at any time other than for PE lessons and clubs.
  • Make up and nail varnish should NOT be worn to school.

Non-compliance with the uniform and appearance policy

Information for parents about school uniform is available here on GOV.UK:

  • The parents of pupils who do not wear the correct uniform will be contacted and requested to bring in a change of clothes for their child.
  • Students who wear make-up/nail varnish or excess jewellery will be required to remove these. Items of jewellery will be confiscated by the teacher to be collected by the parent later.
  • Persistent and defiant non-compliance with the policy will result in an appropriate sanction in line with the school’s Behaviour Policy.
